I first started learning with air rifles when I was 10. My parents bought me a .177 air rifle for my birthday and I'd frequently shoot with my father. Then I joined army cadets when I was 14 and we did a lot of shooting there with actual guns!
In terms of airsoft, that was about the same time as I joined army cadets. One of my friends told me in maths class about the game that was "like paintball, but it all looks authentic and is a bit like Call of Duty/Battlefield, but in real life without being actually real." Naturally, me as a 14 year old boy was intrigued and so I went to EAG Worthing (now Worthing Airsoft) for my first game day. This is where I met Tom Andrews, who was an absolute legend but passed away several years ago, and rented an AK for the day. After absolutely loving it, I did
the thing everyone tells you not to do. That's right, my first airsoft gun was a Warrior L96 (nowadays I think they're the Well L96) and I was happily slinging heavyweight .25 BBs about the place without any spare mags (bag of BBs and a speedloader was how I reloaded), or a sidearm for my MED; Tom basically said "if they get close, run and hope they miss"
I pretty soon after bought a dboys m4 CQBR and a KSC USP .45 that had a leaky mag (I wish I kept it even as a wallhanger, it was such a gorgeous pistol!), because I realised that while I did love sniping and did tend to use my L96 most often, it's good to have something with full auto and no MED. This was also all pre-VCRA and I have none of these guns anymore.
However, the things that really cemented my style of guns were Call of Duty 4 and Black Hawk Down. Playing All Ghillied Up and watching Black Hawk Down as a teenager only reinforced my love of the m14/m21 and m1911 or HK pistol combination. The only gun from back then that I still have is the Bell 1911 that I bought when I moved to Spain at age 17. With my current level of airsoft knowledge and teching experience, that Bell 1911 has been built to be an absolute demon of a pistol now, and I have since moved from Cyma m14 (in Spain), to TM m14 with HPA engine (pre and post-Covid), to WE m14 GBBR with all RA-Tech steel internals and a lovely walnut stock. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
