The 'How Did Your Airsoft Day Go? Thread

Two of my cousins knew him well and I met him a few times; he was much more comfortable with a small group of people and was very different from the Spitting Image version.
You find that a lot with "public figures" in my experience hard to judge em as individuals till you can have an extended natter. Though if he was as grey as the puppet in that restaurant I'd have given the food a miss 😆

New Year’s game with the eldest yesterday at Rift: Redcon 2. His first game too!

It was bloody freezing! Minus six when we left home but as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only poor clothing. So we layered up and if anything we’re too hot by lunchtime when the temps hit a dizzying plus five.

Morning was attack / defend objectives, that kept us all moving and there were some great firefights although the low winter sun made visibility tricky in places so you had to think a bit more and move to positions where you weren’t blinded by it. Red team won the morning by getting the objectives a little quicker than the blues.

Afternoon was one where attackers had infinite lives and defenders just the one, with defenders falling back to the next point they had to defend, with four areas in total. Key for this game is for the attackers to use the advantage and just push, despite much prodding from the marshals a lot of them seemed to forget this so they never captured a single objective! Blues however were more willing to push and were rewarded with capturing all four sites. There was some grumbling from the reds about hit taking which appeared justified as at one point four of them were firing at a sniper and it’ hard to believe that one of the many hundreds of rounds never got through - the marshals had a word. You had to cut people some slack though as with the amount of layers everyone had on you were relying on hearing a hit a lot of the time rather than feeling it.

Food was good and hot, we had Greggs sausage rolls and cheese turnovers. Shop was well stocked and had plenty of chargers for a battery top up at lunchtime. Didn’t win the raffle though 😂

As always, the marshals were plentiful, knowledgeable, friendly and fair.

Overall it was a great day and mission accomplished as far as the eldest enjoying himself goes and he’s definitely wanting to go again. Of course that might just mean that we need to get him a pew as I’ve two gas rifs but only one aeg so I borrowed one from a mate as the temps weren’t exactly gas friendly. I could have got higher power gas and adjusted the NPAS but I’m pretty sure that would have meant it was a tad spicy by lunchtime.

Time to see if there’s some Jan sale deals about for that lad, he’ll need a chest rig too if he wants to give a gas pew a go in future. Might have a look at comms too 😁

Another top day at OTT Airsoft in North Wales. First scirmish with my new tac 41 and his new vmp1. The vorsk struggled in the cold initially, but worked well when it warmed up later. The tac41 was amazing, absolutely loved shooting it. Got to return the favour to the sniper who normally decimates me. He still got me repeatedly, but I got the first kill today. 😆 He's exmilitary, and a lovely guy so I don't mind losing to him.
Was my first day sniping, I definitely have a lot to learn. I still expect a bit more than I should, having an air rifle background.
But it was our best day yet, I don't feel as useless as when we started.

Another great day at Blackstone yesterday afternoon. A relatively busy session meant that there was less opportunities to be sneaky but not so busy you can't move.

The only negative I had was that my MP7 wasn't cycling fully with the bolt not quite closing. First I thought it was just the cold so I switched to red gas, but as this didn't work I stuck with the P99. A highlight was when I managed to quietly follow a red player up the spiral staircase. As I reached the top he turned and saw me but fortunately didn't notice my blue armband allowing me to walk up to him and get the knife kill. The guy took it well and we had a good laugh about it in the safezone afterwards.

The Lad is booked in there for the first time on Saturday afternoon.

He's in for a treat, it's a really well run site (like all rift sites) just make sure he's ok with being shot from very close range

A very very late post but my last game of 2025 was at Armageddon Airsoft at the (near halloween) night game and as it happens, it was my last ever game at that site as the site operators have taken the difficult decision to close the site. The site operators were aware that the land owner had people coming in to remove trees that had been effected by Ash Dieback which turns out to be around 80% of the trees on the site. The site operator turned up on Sunday just gone to inspect the site and it's been devastated. Huge swathes of trees have been removed and more are to be selectively pruned.

Despite numerous offers to help rebuild the site, there's just too much work required and they've decided to close the site. It sucks seeing the site go under from something out of their control but I understand that these things happen. Gutted for the site operators, marshalls and players all of who were great to deal with and a joy to play with & against.

It is sad to see a decent site close.

Went out for my first solo outing since passing my driving test in December and getting myself a car earlier this month. Took myself to Driver Wood for a very muddy, but surprisingly not very wintery game today; if you told me it was March or April with how the weather was today, I might've believed you. I took my Tanaka m24 and TM HK45 which both worked flawlessly all day, however learning a new site with the 10rd magazine handicap is... a challenge. I think in future I may use a DMR or at least my AICS or m40 which have 25rd magazines as some games are very challenging with such limited ammo.

It does seem like they are improving though. Last time I went, one of my criticisms were that the games were a bit stale and unimaginative, but this time the games were much better thought out. First game was a rolling assault through one of the fields I have never played, which was a challenge especially with 5x 10rd magazines as it was a pretty intense game. I think I averaged something like 80% accuracy in this game with my rifle, as I had to make sure every shot counted, and got a few with the pistol when they pushed up aggressively. We got pushed back most of the way, but managed to hold them at the end. We weren't allowed to shoot through the netting, which extended to shooting over the netting too when I asked a marshall as I wanted to get in the double decker bus and snipe people over the netting, but wasn't allowed. Oh well!

Second game had 5 players as a rogue team defending the fortress in the middle of the site. When hit, they counted to 10 before respawning back in, and could be captured by each team by tapping them while they're counting down, at which point they'd respawn in on that team's side until the enemy team did the same. Honestly, I found this game really difficult, as I just don't know good lines onto that fortress yet, so I struggled to line up some crispy sniper shots here. I eventually went into one of the double decker buses to cover the flank and then got hit-checked by a marshall who skimmed a BB off the side of my earpro, and at this point the game was almost over anyway.

After lunch one marshall had a white lab coat on and was the mad scientist we had to capture (same rules as the rogues in the game above) and then escort to a base on the other side of the field, before escorting him to another one for extraction. This game was very back and forth, since we almost got him into the enemy base and then all got shot in the back by a large group that flanked around the edge of the site, so after that I just sat in our base and watched flanks and tried to get kills at 135m. I... didn't manage it (this time). Mission failed, we'll get 'em next time! Neither team managed to get the scientist into the enemy base, so this was a draw.

And the final game was fairly close in. There was a single objective in the middle of the field, with both teams spawning fairly close in (to the point where if there weren't twiggy bits in the way, I could've shot from respawn to the base. However, twiggy bits. Curses! I just went back to that double decker bus and sat in the back and sniped down a corridor along the flank. It was great, and I was stacking up kills... until I got shot in the back of the head by my own team.

Anyway, it was a good day all in, but definitely think the take away for me is to use something a bit more practical while I'm learning the site. Hopefully my m14 scope mount arrives this week and I can start using that, but if not, I have plenty of other options.

The weekend of airsoft - part 1
Saturday saw me playing my first game at a CQB site in many years, and my first visit to RIFT Airsoft’s Blackstone CQB. After what felt like a very strange morning, not leaving for the site until midday, we set off for the mighty Huntingdon. Arriving at the site, I moved my kit into the well set out safezone with plenty of benches and chairs, and had a look around the well stocked shop. Check in to the site was easy, with pre-booking required due to the low numbers, names were taken and checked against a list on an ipad. After signing in, we were called to collect our armbands for the day. Each armband was numbered and again, your number was marked next to your name, presumably to ensure each team had the same number of players, and to make reporting of any issues easier.
Chrono opened promptly at the time stated, with the tv screens around the safe zone letting everyone know that it was open. Chronoing was quick and easy, using your mags and the bb weight you will be using (as it should be). Amazingly, all players present, at this time about 35, managed to get through chrono in around 20 minutes, unheard of for airsofters! The safety brief also started at the time stated (3PM), and was done as a recorded video, again on the TV screens. The brief was pretty good by most site’s standards: comprehensive, clear and not too long.
Immediately after the safety brief we were given the 2 minute call to head out for the first game. This involved both teams trying to find four flags around the site and change them to their teams colour, in our case red. This gave me a good feel for the layout of the site and the way it played, although I did spend much of this first game forgetting about the flags and just trying to find my way around. Games at Blackstone CQB are 20 minutes long, and then immediately played again with flipped respawns. Both sets of this game saw interesting firefights on both floors of the site, in particular around the long stairwell up to the second floor.
After the first set of games it was back to the safezone for a quick 10 minute break to reload, balance the teams and then back out. The second game of the night involved the attacking team, starting upstairs, to get their designated bomber and a bomb to 4 target rooms in order. On getting the the room, they had to set the bomb and protect it for 2 minutes. If all friendly players in the room died within the 2 minutes, the room was forfeited and you had to move on to the next target. The enemy team managed to fight their way upstairs very quickly after the game started, leading to some intense firefights trying to get to one of the four sets of stairs, which were being well defended. Eventually a concerted effort was made to break through, and we managed to bomb our first target, and soon after got to the second. Despite finally making our way downstairs, the game ended before we could reach the third target. On the turnaround to this game, the enemy team managed to break out much quicker than we did, but still only managed to bomb 2 of their targets. This game did however lead to me getting my first ever knife kill against an enemy player who’s shadow I just so happened to see in a doorway.
After another short break and re-shuffle of the teams, we headed out for the third game. This involved each player carrying one plastic ball at a time from their respawn to their teams bucket. While we knew the location of our bucket, we did not know the location of the enemy’s. The first half of this became fairly restricted as we were pinned in our spawn area for quite a while. However, this is somewhat inevitable at a CQB site, and the marshalls did try and solve the issue by opening and closing sets of doors to change lines of fire. While at a stalemate on one of the sets of stairs, I did offer a blue team player that we stop shooting and talk it out over tea and cakes, but he did not seem very keen, so I shot him. On the reverse of this we faired considerably better, managing to get all of our balls into our bucket by forming an almost continuous stream of players.
The final game was a team death match, most people had packed up for the evening by this point, so this was played 2v2. This was a very fun game as it allowed for lots of flanking and popping up in unexpected places to surprise the enemy.
Overall a very good evening of CQB, with everyone playing well and in a good sportsmanship manner. I did not hear any complaints about hit taking or player related issues and was very impressed with the way the site was run. I will definitely be coming back for more getting shot at close range and chucking grenades at people.

The weekend of airsoft - part 2

Following the Lad’s adventures yesterday in Huntingdon, which he has already described, this morning saw us yet again on the way to Airsoft Plantation. The first point of interest occurred as we neared the site along the long and misty woodland lane winds its way to the gate; a small herd of Red Deer ran across the road immediately in front of the car, which was a rather impressive sight.

On arriving, we grabbed our usual places and started setting up; my first task was to set up and chrono the G&G GTW91-P that I purchased from @Isawatree. With the hop set, it was wafting BBs out to around 70m at 1j, which is perfect.

Around 80-90 players were present, which is a decent amount as it provides large enough teams while still allowing plenty of room for manoeuvre and sneakiness.

The mud was rather superb, being rather glutinous and sticky, but not overly slippery.

In the first game, starting at the DEA base, we were tasked to turn on flashing lights on the two Land Rovers in the mortar pits, then the two in the village, and finally the one in the woods; we could not start one phase without completing the previous one. We had infinite marshal regens and the defenders had one life in each phase. We fairly stormed into the mortar pits despite some fierce resistance from the defenders and the two lights were quickly turned on; I was particularly pleased when I took out the sniper on the top floor of the bus with a shot from the MC51. After clearing out the few remaining defenders, we moved into the village, where we again completed the task reasonably rapidly. Pushing into the woods, I was with a group that moved off to our right, attempting to flank the Kill House; after a rather intense fight to clear the enemy out of it, the final light was lit on the last Land Rover.

After a short break, the game was turned around; I took up a favourite position on the left flank of the mortar pits, from where a group of us kept the attackers at a respectable distance for a long time. However, I was of course eventually hit and wandered off to the village, where I met up with the Lad. We decided to take up positions in the woods at the far end of the village to try to hold up any attack from that direction. Quite a few of the enemy duly appeared and we had a good fight with them; having played together for so long, we know how each other will react in situations and so form an effective duo. Eventually, the Lad was hit and went back to the woods; constantly changing position, I had fun knocking off enemies and delaying their advance. By the time I was eventually hit, many of the enemy had already entered the woods and there was no possibility of being able to get involved in the fighting there, so I had a chat with the site owner and then went back to the safe zone. The enemy completed their mission in a longer time than we had taken; hurrah!

After another short break, the next game was briefed. Starting at the far end of the field, the attackers had to fight their way through the village woods into the village and get five players on top of the Cock Inn at the other end. They had infinite marshal regens, while we had one life in a building and one in the open, which could be taken in any order. Again, the Lad and I set up on the right of the woods, slightly further back than in the last game. We were soon very busy as the enemy swarmed forward. We both scored numerous hits, not all of which were taken, including one incident when I repeatedly shot four enemy players at reasonably close range; eventually, they called hits as I just kept pumping rounds into them from concealment. When I was inevitably hit, I moved back to the last two storey building on the road at the back of the village, from where I engaged folk trying to capture the fishing hut; once they had taken it, we had a long and intense duel, which ended when a wafty BB drifted at a 45 degree angle through one of the other windows, tapped me gently on the arm and fell to the floor exhausted. Eventually, of course, five players made it to the top of the Cock Inn.

After lunch (Antipasti Pizza! Yum!), we set off for the comms shack on the edge of the village, while the enemy headed for the mortar pits for a two stage game. Our task was to get into the tunnel in the mortar pits and grab a bomb, which we then had to transport to the plane in the DEA base; once there, it had to be primed by turning on two lights, which started a five second timer, after which it would do what bombs do. We had infinite marshal regens, while the defenders had two lives in the mortar pits and one in the DEA base. The Lad insisted on donning a weird plastic Russian onesie, as seen in the photo, which he soon discarded as it was rather sweaty. He and I, and several others, went on a flank march, moving through the DEA base to attack the mortar pits from the side nearest the tunnel. The defenders were overwhelmed reasonably quickly, so tour team secured the bomb and headed off to the DEA base, where we got involved in a much stiffer fight against some determined resistance. However, the bomb was soon placed in the plane and primed, after which it emitted a large amount of white smoke; rather than indicating that a new Pope had been elected, this was the end of the game.

After another short break, we went to the mortar pits to defend the bomb and prevent the enemy using it to destroy the plane. Their attack was somewhat lacklustre and we held them off for ages until they eventually managed to get their hands on the infernal device. Their attack on the DEA base was equally half hearted, but they managed to complete the mission, albeit in a much longer time than we had taken. Again, hurrah!

It was a very good day of airsoft; there were a few hit taking issues, but the games were well designed, well marshalled and generally played in a good spirit.

This was the Lad’s last game day for a while, as he is returning to the wastelands of Stoke-on-Trent tomorrow. On the way home, we had a long conversation about the quality and classification of the various muds at AP; fortunately, the Lad knows rather a lot about classifying mud.
