I just went to order off Silent Industries based in Czech I proceeded to the payment page and saw they were charging a fee for paypal use.Obviously it's not UK based so perhaps it's different but I thought companies couldn't charge a fee.I don't particularly like paying fees privately,If you want to use the system add the fees to the price prior to sale. And yes I have abandoned sales due to the seller saying "add fees",that is between the buyer and the seller.Might seem petty but it grinds personaly.

No dials and a tension ring,I already have the units.I've found them ok TBH,

Just gotta play it smart. There are some sales where I 100% insist on using G&S, and others where I’m happy to trust the seller and use F&F or a bank transfer.

I bought some MP5 mags from a user on here yesterday. They had feedback and a history of interactions on the forum, so I was happy to go without G&S.

It’s like anything these days, really. You’ve just gotta use your judgement and assess each situation individually.

PayPal fees are part of the deal, and they suck for sellers, especially on a sale worth £800–£900. But you’ve gotta weigh that against the peace of mind knowing you’ve got some protection if things go wrong. I’d much rather lose £100 in fees than get stiffed and lose the entire £800–£900. (I realise this is not an accurate representation of a fee amount; I cba to actually find the fee for an £ 800- £ 900 sale lol)

For private sales, it’s easy enough to add a few quid to the asking price to help cover the fees anyway. An extra £5 is a small price to pay for a bit of peace of mind.

We as consumers pay thousands upon thousands to insurance companies for cars, devices, etc. I don't see the PayPal fee being any different

I do paypal F&F if i had bought from the forum user before
The entire purpose of PayPal is to act as an intermediary processing your payment
The fees are for that service, with “friends and family” as an option to just pass money across with zero protection

By using “goods & services” and paying the fee you get buyers protection and they will side with you by default

Even if it’s as simple as damaged or lost delivery, the seller has to go through a whole claims process - not your problem in theory but you can be sat waiting out of pocket

Pretty sure I've only used F&F for one small classifieds purchase except for one regular seller/buyer who shall remain nameless until they comment & let the cat out of the bag.

Not seen a commercial entity do this before, odd. I've got sales setup through my own site using Stripe and they take a cut as does any other card payment processor, so it shouldn't make much difference. Admittedly I don't know the exact percentages off the top of my head.

Speaking generally here;
As a buyer/shopper I'd say it's a good example of a potential reason to have a credit card that you treat like a debit card. Gives you the same sort of buyer protection as PayPal (there are certain laws that help you, at least in the UK) but some stores might take it without the fee. Will vary a lot depending on the shop of course.
Just plays in to generally having options available. Your current account always comes with a debit, and it's free to get a credit card and PP account and then free to move money around where needed. You can have the relevant apps right next to each other on your phone and it takes a few seconds. Worth doing in order to make things cheapest for you when shopping.

I’ve had a go on their shopping cart, and (without going as far as actually making a payment) the price does stay the same for card payment or bank transfer but then uplifts by about 3% for PayPal

I’ve scanned their terms & conditions for a direct mention of PayPal and can’t find anything but there is a term that costs related to the sale will be charged

The normal way of doing that is to set it in your underlying price then charge by the postal method.
Note that a business also incurs costs no matter what payment method is used - business according costs money for anything but the most basic account and it also costs money to deposit cash

As asked by @snuff it is a breach of PayPals merchant terms to add a fee surcharge (other than in your base price)
It’s also against the law to surcharge by type of payment across the EU (and the UK as we retain the relevant legislation)

If inclined to do so they can be reported to:

Their trading standards:

In the UK post Brexit a consumer dispute with an overseas business can be reported via the ICC
(That’s ICC for International consumer centre, not an International criminal court)

PayPal suggest a couple of options :
If you purchase with PayPal and are charged a surcharge then they recommend a dispute with the seller to refund the excess followed by escalation to PayPal if not resolved
Or if you don’t go ahead with that purchase through PayPal then they can be reported for a compliance breach at :

I personally cover PayPal fees in my asking price if somebody pays via F&F as a thank you I normally throw in something else in the box but I wouldn’t hold anything against anybody using PayPal to its fullest using G&S over the years I’ve had a few problems on EBay that PayPal helped with when eBay wouldn’t

Unfortunately honesty in this day and age is uncommon and makes everyone suspicious until proven otherwise

Business level abuse of the PayPal system should be rewarded with you not buying from them regardless

I'm pretty sure that (as a private / non-business user) goods and services is pointless now on anything to do with any kind of Firearm since PayPal terms were updated?

I think Airsoft used to be excluded by definition, but now not mentioned and all firearms or parts of are banned in their terms, aren't they 🤷🏽‍♂️

They should be read every now and again.

Back some time ago anything gun related was excluded from PayPal worldwide, but they then later allowed for sales that would be legal in each country

Not sure I'm reading this right, but seems like you're telling me I'm wrong, yet I've just re-searched and still can't find anything anywhere that doesn't confirm their global policy on firearms or all classes/categories 🤷🏽‍♂️

Very happy to be wrong, as we might get some protection, so a link would be great if you have one regarding any changes to their global blanket ban on firearms 🙌🏽

That point depends on whether Paypal distinguishes between airsoft (imitation firearms) and firearms.

There are retailers with "airsoft" in their public name and URL that accept Paypal for payment so I don't think it's a reach to infer that Paypal does indeed make that distinction.

That's why I've stated private individuals, as different terms apply to businesses, and they can and do use PayPal within their business terms.

We can't assume that they mean firearms, but not the ones we use, even though firearm is literally in the name of things we use, can we 🤷🏽‍♂️ The fact they previously excluded Airsoft from their ban in their terms and no longer do actually implies the opposite.

It's been discussed at length on various other shooting forums both air and powder, and no-one has ever come up with anything to disprove that firearms means firearms and all evidence from claims having been made has only ever shown they shut it down as soon as they find it's about any kind of firearm, and even some component parts.

As I said above, it would be brilliant to find some actual evidence to the contrary, but it just doesn't seem to be there and only ever seems to be opinions and then more damning evidence and feedback following failed claims 😕

According to the Policing and Crime Act 2017, we don't use firearms:
