DIY

'Tis a peculiar shape- it's more of a wedge than any other shape. Not sure if it would fit in other guns. Here's a pic anyhow:

^^There's always something, eh!?! It looks like a really good design, if not for the nub being made out of cheese.

It's design is pretty nice, the amount of hop is controlled by a knurled disc with a stepped, threaded shaft. The underside has been cut so it fits with a ratchet in the scope mount, making it easy to measure the amount of hop you give the weapon. As you tighten the disc the nub is pushed down.

It'd be nicer if finding parts for the M700 wasn't so annoying. The best tightbore barrels for it are supposed to be the 6.01 640mm EDGi barrels, however the only place I can find them (Evike) doesn't stock them any more; and rumour has it they've moved to a chinese factory with terrible QC. I'm gonna have to make do with MadBull 6.03mm 650mm or a LayLax 6.02 590mm tightbore.

Thankfully FireSupport stock the rest of the parts I need.

(A short list if PT247 needs it for his takedown version M700)

  • LayLax 6.02mm 590mm TBB w/rubber
  • G&G gas route connector spring
  • G&G Hop rubber and seal set for M700 (gonna test the difference between G&G and LayLax rubbers, plus it's all 1 product)
  • King Arms steel strike plate w/striker spring
All totals at £99.50 incl. delivery.

Ouch :D

I have a prommy 6.03 650mm tbb and the G&G rubber set on its way along with some other bits. Gonna have a play around with AEG buckings, if I can't get that to work will just get the barrel modified for the current hop set up.

Does anyone remember me saying I was going to get an M200 spring to see how far my SVD would shoot? Well I fitted it this morning. 3 problems: 1) I can't cock it normally, I have to use a wad of clothing placed on the handle and press it down with the butt against the floor; 2) my chrono will not give me a reading, even firing 0.3's; 3) the tree I use as a dark background to test absolute range is about 100-5m away and the shots sail over it still on a flat-ish trajectory...

I'll take it with me to Skirmish next time I'm there because it's a quick job to change springs. I'm getting 388-395FPS on 0.3's with the hop set from my new airsoftpro.cz M130 spring and V2 enhanced piston with PDI W-hold rubber and 6.01x595mm barrel, which are good numbers considering the limit on 0.3's is 408.2FPS - I was planning on 400, to give me a bit of room for chrono variance (which is tight I know, but there are options), so my FPS-foo isn't working too badly. To get that I've dispensed with the stock spring guide collar and used the plastic one which comes with the V2 piston - it's only about 3mm longer but it's good for 5-6FPS more.

I haven't re-zeroed my scope yet so I can't say how good the new airsoftpro.cz steel barrel base is, but just aiming over the irons I can tell the gun jumps less when fired. I think it might be worth looking into putting some additional weight inside the handguards and I've been meaning to extend the stock by a couple of inches, to fit my arms better, so I'm thinking some metalwork on that, rather than just a shaped block of wood, may be the way to go.

Oh yeah, and I'm getting about 90m flat-ish trajectory with this new set up, which is easily 10m better than I was getting from my Madbull 6.01x590mm barrel with the W-hold rubber.

Cropzy here again.

Here is how I made my gun case.

I purchased one of these of off Fleabay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271152550770?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Now they are old and have been stored outside since the 90's so they have a little rust on them.

The case itself is quite heavy being an army surplus ammo crate. They are air tight and water tight and the locks are very tough and hard to lock.

Mine came with the original inserts for the munitions it once held, which are certainly bigger than 50 cal.

I took the lid and give it a scrub down with a wire brush to get rid of all of the loose rust and then did the same to the case itself.

I then took the lid and painted it with some green Hammerite we had laying around, this is so that the lid is protected from rust and rain etc for the future.

After it had dried.

I then started looking at foam to put in it, I figured most gun cases have egg box style foam in so I bought a sheet of it measuring 2m L x 2m W x 3mm H and cut it to size in 3 pieces. 1 for the bottom and lengthways sides. Then the other 2 for the other sides.

I then purchased some spray glue (carpet adhesive) and sprayed the inside and fitted the foam and then let it dry.

The final product turned out quite well, its not as good as a professional but it will do!

Nice work-But the bright green sort of looks ugly in comaparison to the rest of the thing. Maybe some Krylon OD to darken it? Otherwise looks really cool and well made.

It was literally what I had lying around in the garage.

I do plan on getting some krylon and painting the whole thing then putting some military stencils on.

Thanks for the nice feedback!

I haven't really done anything on this as a project per-se and these are the very initial stages (nothing here is dimensioned correctly, just traced pretty poorly from images - the original designers would probably pull their hair out to see how butchered their designs have become here) but since I was thinking about AKs and the lack of RIS rails on them generally, I came up with a little idea.

Seeing as I have seen many examples of people carving their own AK furniture and integrating things such as foregrips into the design, I thought to myself "maybe it would be interesting to see an AK handguard design with a magpul AFG built into the design. Not as an attachment, but actually integrated, the handguard and AFG from one piece of wood.

So, being trained in AutoCAD, I hopped on the computer and churned out these few prototype ideas in a few hours. If I can get proper dimensions of things somewhere, maybe i'll take a stab at carving the furniture myself. I'm just curious to see what others think of this idea, as utterly mental as it might be.

(I realise this is a little out of the ordinary for the DIY section as it usually involves something you have actually done, but I didn't want to start a whole new topic for something that might ultimately just be long forgotten about in weeks to come. ;) )

Edit; Bottom one should read "AK74 W/O DETAILS". D'oh!

I dunno. I wouldn't want funky wooden handguards on any of my AK's. If I want a foregrip I put a polymer or aluminium RIS on there, like this one...

...whom I call Sabine.

Having said that, if you want a wooden AFV, it's your gun and if you have access to a programable mill to make it exactly how you want, it'll be cheaper than buying a Romanian style LCT replacement handguard.

i think it could work. in fact its the sort of thing i think about, currently thinking of soing some form of carpentry course that could help with such skills...

so today rather than just thinking about it i started on the wooden grip for my shotgun as the long plastic one is doing my head in. after a lot of drilling filing etc it finally kinda fits(really should have picked a bigger bit of wood in the first place...) but it now fits smugly. looks crap like but it hasnt been shaped yet so hopefully before i go to my evening extra gig ill shape it a bit and maby get it finished, if not i should on friday...... tis already an improvement though...
