When buying a gun what payment method do you use.

Some retailers do offer payment plans allowing you to pay in smaller interest-free chunks. Have you considered that option?

It's slightly awkward as you'd need a bus or taxi ride when you get off the train from London but there is a boot sale next month in Marks Tey Parish Hall, just outside of Colchester. Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing what will be for sale until you're there.
I will probably make the journey to Marks Tay on the 7th February, Ive been a couple of times before and it's usually a good spot. Picked up a TM AKS EBB last year which has been a nice, straight shooting if slightly underpowered rifle. The main challenge is it's indoor in a hall you can't test fire the guns. The same people also run a fair at the Skirmish Billericay site which allows you to take kit on the range to test if agreed with the seller.

here's a decision tree

1) the first thing to ask, Is collection possible? (even if you're too far to collect)

-> no, STOP - if they can't meet is a scam
-> yes, proceed to next step

2) "actually I think is a bit too far for me to collect, if you'd post it to me, could I pay you by PayPal?

-> No, ask why
-> yes, just go ahead, paypal is on the buyer side 100% of the times, you just need to open a claim saying "item not as described" and the seller automatically lost.
-> If they say yes, but prefer bank transfer, ask them to provide feedback of previous transactions, then decide whether you're willing to proceed or not, even with bank transfer, you can request a charge back if you're buying something online and is not as described, some cards like Revolut have purchase protection, and return protection, if seller doesn't take it back you can open a claim with there insurance.

Me personally as a seller, I rarely accept PayPal for rifs, the average pistol I build and sell is £500, rifles can go up to £1.5K, if you're an individual and not a shop, is a lot of money to risk through PayPal.

Paypal also doesn't offer protection or airsoft purchases I think, another reason why buyers always win claims.
