Hi there folks

I thought i'd sign up to this forum after google gave it as the first result

Me and a few friends have decided airsoft is the way forward, so I thou8ght I would pick your collective brains.

First off rifles.

is something like this going to be much good, and last me a little while? Is there much scope for upgrading?

Or do I save a bit more and go for something like a g&g or ICS (i've heard these are resnoble quality) bearing in mind I need to loadout from scratch.

Sidearms.

Electric or gas? I had an old tm gbb deagle about 12 years ago that liked venting after a few mags. Is this still the case? or have they got a bit better since back then?

Venues.

I'm based near horsham in west sussex, there seems to be a fair choice arounfd the area (west sussex) does anyone have any suggestions for a good site?

I'll leave off with the pestering for now, i'm sure i'll think of more questions for you lot as I go olong.

Welcome to the forums.

Yeah I've found that if you stick with the popular guns M4/G36/AK47 etc and your pretty much guaranteed to find upgrades for them, take a look in some of the classified sections at guns for sale, usually you can find guns upgraded by other people for the same price as a stock one is new. If your ok with having second hand gear and guns you can find some really good deals

I assume you know about the law and UKARA (If not check the UK law section on the forum, its pretty comprehensive).

Anyway Im not sure about Electric or Gas for sidearms, I have heard the good old English weather makes gas weapons much more temperamental depending on how hot it is and if your indoor/outdoor. Either way usually you'll not need to use a sidearm except when your primary misfires/breaks or you run out of loaded mags - Either situation doesn't look good really

As for sites, I'll leave other forum members nearer West Sussex give advice on that, I have no idea.

Go gas for sidearms - bit more realism and satisfying snap to it. EBB low power go for GBB. They have the problems but maintenance should keep this under wraps

Looks like you have been given a fair bit of advice already, don't be afraid to ask, that is what we're here for! Nice to know you found us first.

G&G Combat machines are great starter guns and allow you to get a feel for a gun for £130, not exactly breaking the bank and work really well out of the box. If you are not a UKARA registered player or do not have any form of defence under VCRA, you will need to have it two toned until you have gained said defence.

To join the UKARA databse you will need to play 3 games in no less than 2 months and no more than 12 months, these must be played with the same company (If the company has multiple sites, you're okay to play at different sites under their name.) a form will then be sent off and you will be put on the database for 12 months, after this 12 month period make sure to tell your site you wish to stay on there (Only if you do wish to stay on that is.) and you can buy as many RIF's as you want!

If you buy a RIF that has been sprayed to be an IF (Some companies will do this for an extra £10) when you gain your defence you can remove this paint with some acetate or something along those lines. Or you can buy different body parts in black/tan whatever colour it is.

With sidearms, I prefer Gas, more power, more realistic and generally more bad ass. AEP's from what I've heard and held feel very week FPS wise and someone was even complaining that he was shooting people and they weren't taking hits. Turns out it was that weak they couldn't feel it at close quarters!

With gas you get blowback (If you get a blowback gun obviously) and the sound is awesome. TM tend to do plastic bodied guns which in my eyes are best because in winter you slap a bit of propane in them and they still work a treat. My 226 gets through around 30-35 shots before the magazine is completely out of gas.

With gas you will need to maintain the seals on the magazines and lubricate the slide and blowback mechanism every so often, and store your magazines with atleast 50% gas to keep the seals working. This is probably why your Desert Eagle is spraying gas everywhere, because it wasn't properly maintained.

I'll leave the sites to others around the area, but the Mall in Reading which is about 1 3/4 hour away from you is awesome!

I have read up on all the UKARA stuff, so will either go down the hire route at first, or a couple of sites round here do the rent to buy scheme, where you can pay off a gun of your choosing while earning your defence like so

I'll give them a ring and see what sort of prices they come back with.

Along the lines of eye protection i've got these which I use for hooning about in my kit car (no winscreen, bugs hurt at 80 mph lol) will most sites be happy with this sort of thing?

How about gloves? any recomendations for a reasnoble pair that are good for feel.

Aslong as they're rated with some quality code, then you're okay. Ring the manufacturer and make sure though, you only have 2 eyes, they look okay and at military glasses I'm sure they will be, but check first, you don't want to lose your sight!

Oaklies or Mechanix. Get the hard knuckle versions as hand shots hurt like hell. Go for around £30-40 but are worth it!

If I were you, I'd go with mesh goggles for two reasons:

1) they are impossible to steam up;

2) there is no BB gun allowed on an airsoft site, or even one that is a bit too hot, that could possibly get a BB through steel mesh, no matter how bad the manufacturing tolerances.

Gloves-wise, I've tried a few and ended up with a pair of Kevlar & Pyrohide gloves. They are very expensive new, but I can put my hands down on anything that isn't glowing hot with absolute confidence. Not long ago I jumped off a loading dock @The Stan and my feet (encased in German Para Boots) landed in a mixture of debris and undergrowth. I tripped and fell, but by hugging my AK to my chest with my forearms and going down on my hands and knee pads, I was completely unharmed, much to the surprise of a couple of witnesses and me too, kind of!

Elbow & Knee Pads by KH Mountain - £11.99 TBH they're not that good - the material which attaches the elastic to the pad comes apart and the rivets that hold the hard shell on the front come away from the padded back but... If you wrap them in gaffer tape (like duct tape but black) they are great!

The only thing I've got to say against G36 variants is that they must use a mini battery to fit in the foregrip so you can't fit something like a 3300mAh battery in there which will last all day, so you'll have to have a change-over. I suppose that if you do this during lunch you'll be fine, but that would take a second decent battery to last the rest of the day. If you buy one 1600mAh battery at the same time as the gun, you should be able to swap for the 1100mAh that comes with it at lunch and put the 1600 on charge. When your 1100 runs out after an hour or two skirmishing (and it will), you can swap back to the 1600 which should then last until the end of the day (I've done exactly this a few times with my AK). Other than that, the way the fire selector and mag release are laid out on a G36 is excellent. Fitting new mags in is easier than both M4/M16 or AK's and, especially the K or E version, G36's look sub-zero cool.
