does anyone know what might be wrong

when i plug the battery in, it rapidly heats up within a few a few times firing it

i think it may be short circuited somewhere in the gearbox but i have checked that already

what are the other things that could make this possible?

First question, have you had the gearbox apart recently? If you have, are you sure everything went back together properly?

Yes, a short circuit could cause it, or if the gearbox was stuck. When you say you plug it in, do you mean you test fire the gun, or just that pluging it in heats up the battery without doing anything else to it?

no i havent and yes i plug the battery in fire a few shots and then the leads start to get hot, after a few mins of firing it, the wires are steaming almost to hot to touch

Then definitely a short somewhere in the circuit. I had a similar problem on a V2 gearbox I built recently but noticed it because I stick the pistol grip on to the motor and test them before putting in the receiver. On mine the return spring on the safe lever in the gearbox was touching the lower contact on the trigger switch, causing the power to short to the case but also heating the spring coil as well, so the wires became heating coils. I noticed it because the gearbox was not encased by the receiver. If it had been I wouldn't have been able to see anything. Sorting it was a case of putting a piece of insulated tube over the wire to stop it making contact.

Your problem "may" be similar, so try taking the gearbox out of the receiver, fitting the pistol grip and motor and looking for anything obvious. If nothing shows then examine all the leads from the battery to the motor to make sure that there aren't any bad connections that are touching on the receiver anywhere (presuming it's a metal one).
