for me it's taking a RIF and turning them into Realistic Realistic Imitation Firearms (RRIF). As mad as it sounds some AEG's give you a basics of the weapon it's trying to be and with a bit of time and effort can be made to be more inline with the real thing. An example is below. These are VFC AK74 AEG's which are lovely out the box but with a bit of effort can be made to look more like the real thing. In this instance I added Soviet wooden furniture, RS rear sights, RS slings and modded a couple of RS AK74 mags to take the VFC midcap internals. The spotters out there will point out the pistol grip gives it away as a airsoft gun but since these photo's were taken I've added the Ares slim motor grips to both so they are even closer to the real thing.
Cost for these didn't cost as much as you might think as when I did them, AK74 parts were cheaper than today. There used to be some good sites selling Soviet parts (Red alliance forum, trapper industries and rusmilitary) and the prices used to be a 1/4 of what they are now.
Is it worth it? Probably not as the AEG is still exactly the same before the additions but for me it was and I even got to learn more about this weapon platform doing the work (for example there was 4 distinct furniture styles made during the era of wooden AK74's)
The "problem" of doing down this type of rabbit hole is you can end up with something like the picture below as during research I came across some Soviet wooden furniture in Ukraine that had been factory refinished in an interesting tiger stripe and before you know it I had another VFC AK74 sporting a set of the tiger stripe furniture.
The need to go to this level of detail is getting slimmer nowadays as there are that many companies and models available that if you are a particular model then there is a good chance it exists on the market. It can probably be tweaked slightly to add a bit more realism however the bulk of the work is most likely been done by the manufacturer now (i'm looking at you Specna Arms KPYK range of AK's!)
