First AK12 in Production

The CYMA 02 AK gearbox is now in my AK12. Theoretically, with a bit of fiddling, you could just drop it straight in, put it back together and off you go, although in practice it required a bit more effort. So for anyone contemplating doing a similar thing, here's how mine went:

The gearbox does drop straight in place, however, the wires have to reach spring loaded terminals at the rear of the receiver which connect to the terminals on the stock housing the battery. Those wires can easily foul the gearbox and prevent it from sitting properly in place, so I made that a little bit easier by shaving two small channels into the moulded runners on the inside of the left half of the main body of the rifle, to give the wires a bit of room to easily pass under the gearbox housing. The plastic was easily shaved out using a broad chisel blade.

The CYMA gearbox comes with a Tamiya plug on it, so I cut that off, stripped some of the insulation off the remaining wire, cut the two terminals off the old gearbox, leaving a bit of wire attached to those, and then simply joined those to the wires on the CYMA gearbox then soldered the wire twists and covered them with insulation.

Upon putting the gun back together, I discovered a minor issue arises when switching the CYMA 02 gearbox for the original plastic one: When you slide the pistol grip over the motor section of the gearbox, you find that the countersunk hole for the screw on the bottom of the pistol grip (where the motor height is adjusted) is approximately four millimeters further to the rear than the threaded hole on the bottom of the CYMA gearbox. You can tilt the pistol grip enough to get the screw to go in and fasten up, but doing that would mean the pistol grip would not sit nicely against the lower receiver, so what I've done, is fill the screw hole (with Milliput) and then re-drill a new hole for the screw a bit further forward, which means the pistol grip does now seat properly.

So, not quite a 'drop in' modification, but not very far off it, and easy enough for anyone to do with some very basic tools. I've not chrono'd the thing (will try to do so this week) but it does shoot very hot now and if I put a better barrel and hop up on it (which I probably shall) then it would be a very very good rifle indeed, and it is already pretty good now even with the original barrel and hop up unit.

So, total cost thus far for an AK12 with decent internals: 69.99 for the gun, 40.13 for the gearbox adds up to 110.12. If it was any other sort of widely available rifle type, I'd say it was not worth the effort of doing it, but since it is the only AK12 you can get, and you want one that you could reliably skirmish with, then it is worth doing this little project, as sticking a decent barrel and hop on it would still have the thing probably costing less than 150 quid.

well done sir - if I didn't have so many guns I would be getting 1 or 2

not much to add but I think 5% off coupons are still valid = £66:50 delivered

codes horse or coconut

but if you wanna save a little more then crazyeyes = 7% = £65.05 delivered

(£4:90 saved)

dunno why Dom does those bloody daft youtube discount codes

total tw*t on coconut - who the heck got his bird to do the horse one

and crazy eyes will scare young kids - but hey they help get a few quid off so wtf

AHHHhhh double wtf - ordered one - dunno when I will get round to swapping it out

but for 65 I could not silence those "buy me" screams no more - damn it

Great job, Chock! I'm sooooooooooo tempted...

BTW, that screw in the bottom of the motor cage of V3 gearboxes does not adjust the motor height, it just holds the pistol grip on. The motor adjustment is done by a grub screw with a hex key.

AHHHhhh double wtf - ordered one - dunno when I will get round to swapping it out

LMAO. Well, at least you'll be the only one at your skirmish with an AK12.

I'm starting to kind of like its looks now it has a tac light, foregrip and red dot sight on it

Got mine today, not really played or fired it but a quick couple of things

Barrel is 100m shorter than it could/should be - chock did mention this I know

BUT - one thing that should be noted and I never fully realised....

This is NOT gonna be a regular skirmish weapon I think coz it won't be so easy to service

and maintain - eg: - hop up clean/replacement - the 2 halves will have to come apart again

to replace hop up - so the threads will soon strip

Now hopefullu somebody like CYMA or maybe JG may remake the ar$e end coz it is just

a usual AK front end but more modern body - can't be that hard to remodel a reg AK47

body - I mean we have numerous options to replace a cheap plastic CM28 with a metal

body so maybe CM or JG will remake a half decent plastic and maybe later metal body

This will make the gun easy to service and maintain - atm don't expect this AK12 to last

if you keep taking it apart like I said - but better body and you are onto a winner I reckon

I like it - sort of modern AK - ergh yeah that was the idea I know

but think it would be a good cross over from the normal M4 user to try out

So c'mon on Cyma & JG - make a proper body and start making us a better AK12

reckon it will be a good seller - well I will buy one/two

will play more with later but hopup replacement can be a bitch on this Viper one

so don't rush out and buy it if you thinking of using it a lot chaps

So have you fitted a new hop into yours, SD, or is that just your impression?

I ask because I'd like to know for sure whether a standard AK hop chamber fits into that plate arrangement. Self tapping screw holes into plastic can always be filled in and retapped. Not that I wouldn't prefer CYMA or D-Boys to make a steel AK-12 receiver, or G&P to make an aluminium one, but just saying that there are options.

Not taken any of my AKs apart yet so no AK expert

BUT was just saying these cheapo guns are not designed to be taken apart regularly
So say you change hop up rubber in 6 months time then these cheapo guns may
and I say "may" not hold up well over time and like my B500A1 ooh it is a git to open
where as a TM compat M4 pops open much easier to say change hop up rubber

It is not gonna be an easy gun to maintain coz of its cheap build
Just thought about stuff like changing hop up rubber and ooh crap its all gotta come apart again

OK well you could pop in say a 400mm barrel and hop up n rubber, but still if it needs

a bit of cleaning, servicing & tweaking then it is not same as servicing "normal" AEG's

that was what i was meaning and thought it should be taken into account before buying

c'mon CYMA knock out a new AK12 rear end by the New Year maybe ????????

I had 1 but sold it onto my friend. I loved it the only reason i sold it was because it has plastic internals! :(

It's a good point about the durability of it in terms of taking it apart often, in fact, where the mag release spring lever attaches is very weak, to the extent that I basically remade that part with an additional bolt through the other side of the tube which the catch sits on, in order to stop that from coming apart as the spring puts the plastic under quite a lot of tension. It's likely that I'll do some kind of mod with all the screw holes too, since - as it comes - the screw holes are likely to strip their threads easily.

Took it to a skirmish on Sunday, didn't use it myself as I was using my M4, but I did lend it to someone else when their gun stopped working. It had a few minor issues with the fire selector, but it was basically usable and I know the guy got a few kills with it, although the battery is certainly not up to an entire day and I did in fact put a spare one in there after a while.

I bought a B500A1 & Well D68 (M4 & G36 cheapo) at first and they could at a scrape

work ok-ish and I do say ISH on cqb but never really for anything at woodland site

but AK12 is longer (even though they probably used the D68/AK74 inner barrel in there)

so may not be compact for cqb - but chock has given it a good boost with a proper G/box

to give it back a bit of ooomph out in the field

I gave in and bought one and probably never get around to putting in a g/box as it slowly

dawned on me about bucking & maintaining it once I had her out the box - damn it

Think most of us would like the traditional AK's to be a little more "mount" friendly like the

AK12 but alas the AK mounting system is a bit limited and often needs a little mod or tweak

to fit some rails on there if they are not specific to your own AK:

side SVD quick detach or screw on TM type AK plus the RIS battery cover that seems to fit

only on some cyma 39's there is also another one I found recently but seems overkill to me

http://www.khmountain.com/airsoft/product_info.php?products_id=3268

on the DIY side of things - the best possible DIY mount seems to be this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hunting-Dovetail-to-Weaver-Adapter-Picatinny-Rail-Scope-Mount-100mm-Length-/331327022780?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item4d24a126bc

note how it is curved underneath to help affix to top/battery cover though you still have some bumps or

ridges to file down/remove or groove the rail underneath - quite likely the curve or contour may not be

a perfect or complete 101% match but certainly better than most "flat" underside rails

The main pain is it being a tad short 100mm, a 150mm would be better but suppose fit 2 x 100mm I guess

At least if this DIY version was fitted then it wouldn't be such a pain to change battery for some compact AK's

The side fitted mounts or 39 mount could be a pain if battery was in top cover

The Tri-Mount on KH Mountain has the main rail raised maybe too much I think

and the main iron sight on AK sits very very low, so moving back just the rear iron sight even on a slightly

higher rail will very likely require the from sight being raised too perhaps

Hence the AK12 has real advantages with its more modern out of the box rail look

but there are some possible rail options for classic AK's and do hope Cyma might do a " 12 " based rear end

AK coz I do like it. Plus the Airsoft AK's do hold up very well even if you hate them - they do hold their own if

you give them a go

OOoopps soz for going on - probably leave my AK12 as is for now as I said I dunno when I will get round to it

(If I actually bother doing the g-box mod - but mega kudos to Chock)

Dunno if this is new news or not, but a company called NPOaeg are making a proper AK12, although they will most likely charge through the roof like they have done before

That's probably a bit of badge engineering going on there. I'd assume that a Well one is almost certainly the Black Viper one under a different brand name.

it is - or more likely the other way round

a Viper is a Well AK renamed I reckon

kinda funny name really - some/a few of the Well stuff is ok-ish but most is not

so with that in mind perhaps most of stuff is not very "well" and should perhaps be called - ill instead

Yeah my gun is I L L & it really is sick (says the guy with more broken or unwell guns than most)

Finally - Hopefully finished my own AK12 and I would like to first of all express a massive thanks to Chock for taking the plunge

I hope you are ok m8, I know you had a few problems but hope you are doing ok and can pop back soon

Fanx also to BBguns4Less - Chock first then shortly after I bought one too but was unsure if I could be ar$ed to re-do it

Then think they had a broken one going cheap and a broken DE 901c - frizzle's favourite AK or pile of crap for AK TM compatibility

Hmmmm - 901's crappy plastic gearbox with crappy plastic gears (thought they looked metal gears but was just plastic gear on metal spindle)

Has a kind of normal cheap motor frame and short motor - little guts but yeah it could kinda work....

Now I can use a metal JG box but for $hits & giggles I thought wtf lets try n see if that crappy plastic box from 901c could be beefed up

and fitted into the AK12. Also lets not go mad & refit a new spring/piston/cylinder head and all that but see what spares I got lying around

OK - I got some SRC cheapy metalurgy/tin pot 18:1 gears that could get her working better than shredded plastic gears

(this would of been ok and I wasn't gonna go too mad - or so I thought and this was my downfall - I'll come to that later)

These gears are crap and the spindles are 2.9mm not 3mm so chose to use plastic bushings but some of the more "tighter" bushings

yup they spin and was shimmed taking my time - that was quite easy....

Full cylinder or there abouts coz fitting 455mm barrel - a 510 is just a tad too long so 455mm is nice and aprox 10mm short of outer barrel

if you removed flash hider - or say up 500mm if still fitted - 510 just sticks out of the vents at front of hider

(flash hider is stuck/glued on and the broken one was a little cracked and came off easily - it ain't screwed on btw)

But fitting a full cylinder had a few minor problems coz tappet plate was now snagging moving back n forth and also catching near end of travel

the old cylinder was very thin and ported for 250mm barrel so I became very good friends with a few small files and craft/kitchen knife plus

got quite flirty with some sandpaper - seemed everytime I replaced something I would spend another 30mins - 1hr filing/sanding smoothing etc...

Easy to replace but didn't have much AK/ver 3 spares to hand at the time hence bit more pi$$balling about making do with what I had

But long story short - yeah reckon she may be ok with the DE 901c plastic box in there so lets rip open the AK12 and see how we go.......

Not gonna go over most of what Chock did and he did a very good job indeed - another fanx from me

Barrel - yup takes a normal AEG barrel - unlike the 901c which has a weird bespoke barrel/hop unit - well that is good

901 box yeah goes in there ok - a little play and very little locks it and holds it all in place

so a few bits of cardboard box used to pack it out a tiny bit - yeah think she may bloomin all fit in there ok

Did have a Madbull 510 barrel but seems crap and was jamming a lot, crap cloggy junk

455 barrel - cheapo 6.03 that was gonna go in say a Cyma 028a - yeah that works nice

(couple of o-rings help to reduce barrel rattling around in outer barrel)

yeah this may work out quite well - put in an old double o-ring plastic cylinder head - dunno where it came from but was very good seal

(dumped old cylinder + head & crap seal nozzle - kept old piston and used spring & spring guide but used another o-ring on piston)

nozzle was a new AK one with single o-ring, a plastic nozzle didn't fit well and was a tiny bit oval/distorted and lost a bit of compression

yeah that will work -oooh lets replace the stock motor for a Big Dragon M160 mofo

That motor is one crazy bitch - deffo a little faster than a SHS High Speed type plus should have more grunt/torque too

Yeah better fit a mosfet in there - got a couple of cheap crappy mosfet's from TWG - Do NOT buy these they are crap

You push them they will just melt - get a proper fet or make your own from genuine 3034's

Anyway fitted a crappy fet in there and will run it on 7.4v lipo's only but it still gets hot when spamming on semi....

Stock is a bit crap on AK12 - not much room in there for bigger batteries - well it comes apart if you are careful !!!!

3 screws and you can split the 2 halves - hmmm reckon I can remove some of that in the middle and get some more room back

yup that will work - fet can go there run wires there - extra room for a more decent size block battery.....

Resolder some new thinner wires on gearbox's switch - all externally - gotta love v3's and how they are much easier over v2's

Carefully route wires in AK's shell, into half of stock through the 2 old "sprung contact points" that was in there previously

Wire it all up aprox, refit 2 halves of gun - yup looking good here.....

Oh I sprayed the thing too whilst I was messing about with crappy plastic box - 2 quick coats inside shell

then 3 coats on outside - think I prefer PlastiKote over Krylon myself, seems a more flatter black but that is just my take on it

Now the stock is a little fiddly to mod but not too bad, route wires get that finalised then put back catch/spring...

A little jiggery pokery plus prodding any wires that might come out of position whilst closing up the 2 halves of stock

REMEMBER not to try and be a dick and unclip stock - or you will rip out the permanent wires in there

Might be a good idea to jam the spring catch to avoid ya m8 trying to remove stock perhaps

(or just be selfish and don't let anyone else borrow it)

Yup she looks good and she fires very well indeed - minor gripes.....

pistol grip is a bit naff and not the best job I made of it - got it wrong guessing where new hole position should be

the stock hop up keeps sliding off as I let rip - tighten screws a bit still does it

didn't wanna go nutz as it is a cheap plastic hop - did change hop rubber to a used silicone clear one but still loses setting

so another bit of card jammed in hop and she moves no more - can't finely adjust it but seems quite good at jammed position

(my metal ak hops haven't arrived from far east yet or Poland come to that so have to make do but seems ok)

Best use .25's and she sprays in a nice straight line for quite a while

Yup very pleased - brought it along and was looking to a an afternoon of seeing how she performed

BANG - wtf has she jammed or box siezed ???

Have a quite look - nozzle hardly moving at all -- ohh that ain't right

had a spare gun but was absolutely GUTTED I went home with the right hump with me wanting to suss out wtf had failed

I must of put close to 1,000 through here at home on/off and chrono and messing with hop & bb's etc.....

What didn't help was that I charged the 2 x 7.4v's I was gonna take and popped in a 9.9v LiFe in there - wow she was really motoring

Yeah that didn't help pushing her even more....

Ahhh crap - seems the cheapo SRC sector with its thinner width teeth to spur gear had crossed and mangled up

This had happened to me once before and my own stupid f*ckwit fault for trying to do it on the cheap

especially with such a cheap nasty set of gears.....

The other gears were fine - even spur was ok just the sector is too cheaply made and thinner width teeth, you shim with a slight gap/play

then there is very little left to run on the other gears teeth properly, little stress and BANG

The really annoying thing is that I had this happen before so more fool me

OK - I got a couple of choices here - replace just sector gear, whole set or replace whole box ????

Well I have got one single SHS sector gear that took an hour to locate but that went in there fine

well it is much thicker so had to use 6mm bearings on sector and a few shims - yeah is way more robust

Gonna try this and if she busts again then the JG metal box is going in there ffs

(think I will use the JG box for the first AK12 I bought at full price and use this cheap Ak12 as my learner first one)

Box firing once again - hmmmm she was hitting 338fps aprox at 21.8rps on regular 7.4v 25c lipo's

popped a bearing spring guide in there replacing the normal cheap nasty plastic spring guide

This shoud give me a little more fps but will it take me over 350 ????

Well the fet is a bit crap - don't buy those TWG ones (Big Dragon PCB fets with possible clone mosfets)

Hmmm need to maybe put one of my own ones together and replace the wire for decent thicker wire as

that motor is just trying to draw all it can - was the silver wire of the modify type, better than stock but not

a great deal thicker.....

Worth pointing out that as I was compressing the spring a touch more with bearing spring guide I was expecting

a tiny slight drop in average rps - say 20 - 21 rps - well gotta drop a tiny smidge so Ill guess at 21 instead of 21.8

Ok left it a few days to ponder and then started to finish her off and put her back together with my own fet and thicker wire

Thicker wire was a ok but was little tighter getting pistol grip back on - think the wire I am using might be say 15awg and

I think would be a squeeze in a v2 box but this AK12 has a lot more room in it to feed wires back to stock.....

Only fired a few shots out her so far but yeah she is a little more quicker and a little more powerful...

Hitting aprox 348/355 - hmmm will she be too hot to use

and hitting at 23.8 though this may be higher as 7.4v lipo was in bag from last week and haven't tested the voltage

went nutz on semi spamming and my DIY basic fet was much cooler than that crappy fet from last week

(actually made up a heatsink for it but think I was being a little cautiousn - reckon that may be a bit overkill though)

Anyway soz for massive long waffley bollox post - I think/hope she will last a bit better now

gonna keep her at 7.4v and I am really hoping she will last at least half a day blasting around next time

or will either fit JG box in there or just take up ballet coz I suck at this modding malarky

some pics anyway if anybody thinks of doing what Chock, me and some others have done.....

AK12 Stock mod or bodge:

0n3JHeC.jpg

The completed AK12 - with 2 x 901c mags taped together noobish COD style - gonna try 2 x 1k mags next to travel ultra light

0acNHU5.jpg

if you are thinking about it then by all means gimme a shout and I will try to help (keep it brief I promise)

First modding attempt she was firing like AK - Safe - FULL - SEMI and was a bit hit n miss on selector

when I re-did I noticed the AK12 selector was different and so used that selector plate

but still needed a little mod to work properly - think now she works like M4's: SAFE - SEMI - FULL AUTO

and reckon she engages correctly 99% of the time - well better than before - bastid AK selector gears etc...

(god bless the person who invented mini files/sandpaper)

And yes It took a while on & off but thought wtf lets have a go at it, a little service on a G&G or decent gun is a walk in the park

compared to working on lame ar$e cheapo piles of crap - this was quite do-able though as we know

beefing up a D68 or a B500A1 is gonna be a little more tedious and tbh dunno if you/I would bother

but as this is about the only AK12 we might get hold of for a while - it is a nice fun project and could be worth doing

Only you would put a high speed motor in a gun with a plastic gearbox, Duck. Only you.
well the CNC box with Seigtek DSG is going in my JBBG B500A1 - kidding

Small update - did half day on Saturday and she still works !!!!

To be fair - only probably used about 1.5k that afternoon, was hoping to go mental but started out well

but got taken out on last game early and was a long game but had some fun with it all the same.....

The cheapo DE 901c mags struggle to feed well when pushing 30rps on 9.9v

got a jam and though crap not again - but cleared and stuck at 7.4v after that

plus stock piston/spring has that crappy metal spring clip/mount in it so it ain't ultra light so not pushing 11.1v & Pre Engagement

Also above 7.4v she likes to try & double fire on semi with a standard non braking fet

So yeah keep her on 7.4v is the message me thinks on this one

still plastic m901c gearbox and metal BD m160 motor = 24.8rps on fresh 7.4v probably 8.5v aprox

(that is 3 x faster rof & aprox 100fps more than crap stock box & motor)

Got a few peeps asking about it - where did you get that ???

They lost interest when I told them what & where it came from - lol

Real shame the hop is a bit crap, still over hopping on .25's a little

range is a tiny bit better than a regular G&G out of box - shoots a tiny tiny bit to left & crappy sights offer next to no adjustment

Alas due to the build/design of cheap plastic receiver it has to come apart - which I knew, to replace with a better hop

Had fun all the same when enemy popped their head up from behind cover - "Ave some of thaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttt"

Deffo can have some fun with it but was a little worried about tripping ar$e over tit with it rushing around the woods

Doubt if she will hold up after a few falls - sturdy & quite solid looking with little flex

But that don't mean she is as robust as say a regular AK or polymer G&G is what I mean

Fire selector - well started out working perfectly but end of day need to go to safe then back to semi :(

(bastid selector gears but a common AK problem and this is a cheapo cheapo box too)

Hope to take it for a full day and see if it still works after 4k or so through it in one day

then maybe if box holds out ok finish beefing up another m901c box but stock motor setup

Chuck this moderate build back in a M901c for a laugh & consider a proper metal box in other AK12

(saw a few of these M901c BB guns on Sat so could be fun to take a more robust one to say the Mall one day)

Fanx again to Choc, BBG4L & Well/Black Viper
