Evening guys.

So like the title says, I'm rebuilding a Star L85 to sell to my mate who's getting back into the game.

In the process of identifying issues, I came across a problem with the original nozzle being worn to buggery, and endeavoured to find a replacement, as its a somewhat non-standard size at 22.25-3mm. I purchased a maxx brand one in 22.3mm and all seemed fine until it got to checking fitment between nozzle and hop unit. The Maxx nozzle has a very hard step about 2/3rds down that effectively stops the nozzle going far enough in. Now it will fit with forcing, but obviously that's no good for a part that needs to move somewhat freely.

My question is, would it be better to try modifying the nozzle to fit, or modifying the hop unit?

Or, even better, does someone know of a nozzle that would fit without issue?

Cheers in advance all :)

You're quite right about the STAR=Ares thing, but I've struggled to find spare parts even from Ares, as it's a much older version of the L85 and was annoyingly off-spec from the very beginning . Ares has never gotten back to me about parts in the past, so I'm not keen to try again, only to be ghosted once more, hence trying alternate options.

Edit: That and STAR/Ares parts result in atrocious air seal anyway in my experience.

Much appreciated! That's the one I tried before but it's worth a shot if nothing else :)

I just told them the part numbers I needed (might be the hard bit for you) and they sent them, I obviously had to pay for them but the price was decent & they even sent 2 by mistake.

Doesn't say what length it is but it says it's for an SA80 so it should be correct and it has the part number. Sadly it's actually out of stock from their own store.

BunnyWorkshop have some in stock.
AsiaAirsoft have them in stock.

^both hyperlinked so you can just click them^

If you need it quick, try ordering a 22.3mm nozzle - i've took spares from different RIFs and used them as replacements in others with no issue. You could also try one of those adjustable length nozzles like the Perun Nozz-X? If you're not bothered about waiting (or paying) for shipping from Asia, then stick with the proper part.

Thanks for that :) I have emailed them regarding it, but based on previous experience, and you now showing on the site that they're out of stock, I'm not too hopeful. Interesting that the STAR used a plastic nozzle whilst they've clearly moved on to metal.

I've updated my post with links to BunnyWorkshop and AirsoftAsia having them in stock in case you didn't see it before replying.

Hey guys! Rather than start a whole new thread I've renamed this one. I've managed to sort the issue around the nozzle by modding an EPES one of the correct length. I'm now having issues around low fps.

Currently sat in the gun is a gate warfet, solink 35k, shs 13:1 gears, shs piston and head. The rest is stock. Airseal is near perfect even with the nozzle extended forward, so I'm pretty sure its not an issue there. Cant feel any air escaping the hop unit either. The only thing I can figure is there's an issue around tappet plate timing. Now I've never modded a tappet plate, and im not sure what I should be doing, so I open the floor to you lovely lot :).

The other thing I'll be trying is adding a delayed chip to the gears to see if that solves the issue, but that will have to wait until when people aren't sleeping. In the meantime, if anyone would like to chime in with some advice or experience, it'll be gratefully received :)

Cheers in advance!
