Noob (3 game days) advise on best rifle please

Hi everyone 

I have played 3 game days at my local Airsoft Edinburgh site, and can definitely say I am addicted already, it’s great as my 12 year old son got me into it and it gives us another shared interest that doesn’t involve sitting on your backside playing consol/pc games, now my question is what would you guys and gals recommend as a good battery powered rifle with goog range and accuracy ?

I currently have a aug which I bought from a friend for cheap but it really is cheap and nasty, I have pretty good budget of between £350-£450 this is money saved from giving up smoking and not the case I have money to burn !!

The main reason for my high budget is I really want to buy something that will last and be upgradable , I am a Gas engineer so can handle disassemble and rebuild of a rifle while following a guide, any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps. I have a side arm so no need for close quarters option.

With that kind of budget you could get something really nice. As you've used an AUG in the past perhaps the ICS L85 would work well for you? Shoots great out of the box and reloads in the same manner. Honestly the best gun I ever owned (then again I haven't owned many).

Alternatively pretty much anything by Tokyo Marui. Just remember that even though you've got the cash to spend there's no need to blow it all on one gun. 

My CM16 I bought for less than £100 for example continues to perform just as well as it did on Day 1 and apart from a few scratches here and there the body has held up really well - no dents or cracks. 

Regardless of what you choose to buy there's some real techie wizards and years of information here that will help you with the upgrading process.

Thanks for your reply and advise it is very much appreciated , I have had a look at the G&G L85 and its a very nice piece of kit so say the least, and at the lower end of my budget to, The only concern i have is i am not a great fan of iron sights and i am not sure if or how easy the handle would detach so i could mount a 20mm rail, is there a similar rifle that doesn't have the handle and i could mount my scope directly ?

ICS, not G&G 

You can remove the carrying handle and fit any type of sight you want. Red dot, ACOG, etc.. 

If you want to go real gucci then one of those new ELCAN sights would look fancy.

+1 To TM and G&g. 

Everyone you ask will give you a different opinion about what is a good starter gun that isn’t budget. 

The top makes with great performance out of the box are TM and Krytac, however these are very expensive, and if it is you and your son I would imagine you’d need to buy twice. 

I personally have had the G&G CM16 as a starter gun, and if you haven’t used one, I’d definitely suggest going to a shop and trying one, for £130(ish) new you get good range, excellent reliability, good accuracy, an upgradeable M4 platform and G&Gs heritage. Very good guns for the money, not much in this price range will give you better performance.

The guys on here also suggest Specna Arms and ICS, I have no experience with either, but I trust their opinions as they are very experienced players.

I also own a G&G L85A2, it’s a solidly built gun, quite heavy though, (depending on what your used to) do your research on these as they do have their niggles.

AUG's can be fantastic if tweaked a little. Good range, and the gearbox is one of the most beginner friendly. As a project gun for playing about with it's a very good platform. Gearbox comes out quickly, hop is easy to get to (even on the A3 where a few screws need removing from the RIS), and magazines are cheap. You can also line the body with padding to remove a lot of the hollow noises they make.

Unfortunately for the AUG they have an almost cult like following. A lot of players hate them for various reasons, noise, plastics, wobble ect. It doesn't stop them been every bit as capable as any other gun on the field if set up well. My own A3 model is ridiculously quiet, Mainly because I wanted to hear the other players! The advantage there been I often get kills without been heard.

The best advice I can give about looking at guns is to go down to Airsoftworld. They have a retail store called "Target Shooting Supplies"

For a budget as big as that you have pretty much the pick of the crop gun wise. If you have £400, spend up to £250 on a gun, And get enough mags to support it, a nice sight,  a pair of good batteries and a charger.

For £200 you can go to Gunfire, and get free delivery. The A1 I just bought was £120, I got a nice 2 gun bag, Springs, Bushings, POM cylinder head and piston head, Aiirseal nozzle, Cylinder barrel, Deans connectors, and a mosfet to make it up to €225 (£200) and got free 6 day delivery. So if you know what you want having been into a shop and seen it then you can go a cherry pick the store to get the very best deal.

As for the AUG, I haven't seen many for sale on here recently. And I have been looking (not now however as I just got a new A1 to go with my A3). So it might sell if you hate it that much.
