It'll work better than a mini battery! There's enough space in the stock for a 3300mah large battery that will last you a whole day (or even weekend) without needing a recharge.
If you want to increase the rate of fire, then a large 9.6v battery will fit in there easily enough too!
You could use minis, but why bother when you can fit a longer lasting monster in there
Or you want to go Lipo you'll be fine running a 7.4v battery, but the main advantage of Lipo batteries is that they are very small compared you NIMH batteries - not something you need to worry about in a full stock M16
