Getting the smell of cigarettes out of a PC

Anybody know how I can get the smell of cigarettes out of a warrior plate carrier?

My Dad smoked and my solution was to soak it in warm water with a cup of baking soda for a few hours then wash it as per instructions on the label. After that just hang it outside until dry.

Something about baking soda gets rid of the odor.
