when an object burns, my understanding is that it gives off carbon and it needs oxygen to burn (badly worded, but ya know what i mean)

so can an element (any element) burn on its own in a vacuum?

I would assume not as the fire triangle needs heat, oxygen and a fuel.

and oxygen isnt a fuel so it can't burn on its own.

anyone else know anything more about this topic than me?

Not that I know for sure but I believe not. The most reactive elements that react with air alone are kept in vacuum's to prevent them going off aren't they so?
