I'm sure you can find an old motorola PMR radio or maybe one of the better binatone ones for the price of the nerf. Hell you can get a Baofeng UV-5R (of which I'm using a borrowed on as my main) for 30 quid

Versatile? Really? Get something that's made for the job, i doubt the range is much further than a couple of feet on them.
