They are absolutely fine safety wise - I've been wearing them for years, and they are pretty much a staple for many of the players at the sites I visit. Shot multiple times on them, never a problem. Once they get a bit too dented, for good measure I replace for a new pair - usually after 10 or so hits.
That said, I think the BB shattering theory is sound, and there are tales of the fragments/dust making their way through the holes in the mesh. Its never happened to me, but the general consensus is that, whilst possible, there would be rather little energy in any such fragments, and they would irritate but not damage the eye.
However, for indoors, i would still strongly recommend non mesh - lighter BBs are more likely to shatter and the ranges are very close as you say, so why take the annoyance of having grit in your eyes. But more than that, they block out some of the ambient light, so in dark environments they would be a disadvantage. Better to use a good goggle - say Pyromex V2G, coupled with a fan system - e.g novritsch or the identical version on Aliexpress for a few quid.

What is the possibility that the bbs will break the mesh when playing indoors?

Higher than outdoor, for the most part BB's will have more kinetic energy upon impact due to bb's having less distance to travel. Paired with people typically using cheaper and lighter ammo indoors where range and time to impact aren't as important, the risk of splintering/fracturing bb's is definitely there.
Honestly, whilst yes mesh is probably okay - Why on earth would you risk your eyesight at all?
A new pair of non-mesh goggles is cheaper than having your eye(s) damaged

It's not so much the risk of the mesh breaking , as the BB shattering on impact and bits passing through the mesh . As above , why risk it ?

Especially these days, when people are out specifically for headshots. I always wear full-seal goggles and a lower mask. That way it doesnt matter if I get shot in the face. Quite often, my upper protection stops me from getting hit on the skin at all, as I tend to be prone when sniping lol.
I think of it like this:
Imagine two buttons, and both have a chance of instantly blinding you.
Button 1 (full goggles): 0.01% chance.
Button 2 (mesh goggles): 2% chance, because there’s the additional risk of a BB shattering/fragmenting and getting through the mesh.
The exact percentages are just an analogy, but if both protect your eyes, why deliberately choose the option with the higher risk? When it comes to your eyesight, even a small increase isn't worth it.
Coming from someone who has worn glasses thier whole life, the convenience of mesh goggles imo isn't worth the additional potential risk (however remote and small)
The chances of someone shooting out a small red dot lens from 40metres is very low, yet you can be damn sure it will happen the day you don't have a protector lol

For indoor sites, full seal eye pro is a minimum in my opinion.
You would probably also be much happier with full face protection too.
For full seal eyepro, tye cheapest option I saw with a 2 second google is the Bolle rush+ 2.0. they also have a strap that keeps the glasses pressed to your face. Which I'd recommend too.

Nuprol goggles should hold up fine to hits, as already posted it's the BB which is more likely to break. Some of the other cheaper masks I wouldn't trust though.
Bare in mind that most CQB sites are dimly lit and the mesh cuts out some of the light getting to your eyes making it harder to see

Testing an old pair of nuprol mesh glasses and it took less than 10 rounds point blank from a tm pistol at around 300fps in the same area to fully penetrate the mesh on one side of the glasses. It is an unlikely scenario and hopefully wouldn`t happen but it is possable someone could come around a corner or pop up and get a small full auto burst point blank.

That's certainly worrying. I agree it's an unlikely scenario but there's still a chance especially if those hits don't happen all at once. This is why I replace my eye pro every so often, even if it looks fine

To be fair it was rapidly firing one after another point blank so perhaps multiple shots spaced out might have less impact but it was from a sub 1J pistol, i also compared to an 10 plus year old pair of bolle trackers with mesh inserts made by heroshark and while they held up better after 15 or so rapid shots from the same pistol it also punched a hole through the mesh on those. It made me realise that while most mesh eyepro will most likely hold up fine to a few shots occasionally in normal outdoor skirmishes under extreme cases they will fail.
Look up the product safety sheet and also on the goggles themselves for what safety standard they are manufactured to.
The Nuprol mesh linked below are to EN1731F, with F being the lowest impact rating, and EN1731:2006 being aimed at industry to protect against low energy chips & fragments - they are used in forestry for wood splinters
Airsoft eye protection should be EN166A or EN166B (EN166F at a push with the absolute minimum impact protection)
With a quick look over the Nuprol site every mesh goggle is under EN1731 at low impact
It shouldn’t be stating the obvious as to why mesh isn’t to EN166 standards
Not only are they not designed for BB projectiles, but the impact standard for a lens/mesh covers the lens/mesh breaking and also whether it could be punched out of its frame. A failure either way opens your eyes to direct impact
The only beneficial elements I can say for them is the foam backing (if properly covering your eye area that stops BBs getting to your eyes from an indirect angle) and the strap which keeps them from bouncing off your face

The real scare story is that Airsoft doesn’t have proper industry standards and sites will just have a basic eye protection requirement. Which may or may not permit specific standards ratings (their insurance will expect standards ratings)
Do any sites actually check eye protection ?

Those of us with hyperhydrosis don't have any other option than mesh. Herosharks mesh have served me fine for years and I'll stick with them thanks. Any damage from fragments will be caught by the contacts hopefully.
On another note, I shot a pair of Uvex goggles that had been drilled all around the edges at 5mm spacing and they stood up to 500fps with .32 just fine.
I wore Uvex goggles as a dispatch rider for years. The drilled holes allowed extra cooling for airsoft. I trusted the Uvex to save my eyes at 70mph hard impacts.

Exfog works a treat for me, and I have RX inserts in my goggles that fog up a lot quicker than polycarbonate lenses on goggles.
I hear the thermal lenses that Novritsch sell are also good but never used them so cant say for sure.
